A flagship measure of Anne Hidalgo‘s second term in office, the creation of a limited traffic zone in central Paris will indeed become a reality from this November 4, 2024, just after the Olympic Games. The measure was confirmed and implemented today, with the aim of reducing current traffic in the heart of the capital by 50%.
Traffic without a reason now banned in central Paris
Mobility in Paris has always been a hotly debated topic. Whether it’s automated metro lines, bike lanes or electric scooters: whatever the means of transport, there will always be discord among Parisians. Today, it’s the car that’s in the spotlight, with the introduction of a limited traffic zone.
Already covered by the Paris Respire operation, which bans car traffic on the first Sunday of every month, the center of Paris, comprising the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th arrondissements, is set to see a similar measure made permanent. Already implemented in a number of European cities, the limited-traffic zone prohibits vehicles from driving without a reason to stop. Just installed, this measure concerns the city’s first 4 arrondissements.
Motor vehicles with no reason to stop will be banned from entering the center of Paris, which will be marked by white signs with red borders. While the next three months will be devoted to education, fines of €135 will be issued to all offenders.
Finally, as regards exceptions, residents of the districts concerned will be exempt, as will emergency vehicles, buses, cabs and VTCs, as well as vehicles dedicated to PRMs and healthcare professionals.
