According to Traffic Index, Paris broke a record in May. No, no, it’s not about the weather, it’s about road traffic. And it’s fair to say that the French capital didn’t shine too brightly. In May, it was quite simply the most congested city in the world, no less!
Paris voted world’s most congested city in May
Between April 27 and May 27, traffic website Traffic Index recorded all the traffic jams reported around the world. The data was collected via Google Maps, then color-coded. Green, orange, red and black, the most congested.
The result? Paris tops the rankings, having recorded the world’s highest traffic congestion index for the entire month of May 2024. Even so, the capital is ahead of major cities known for their heavy traffic, such as New York, Mexico City and New Delhi.
It has to be said that Paris has been on a roll in recent weeks. Traffic jams were a daily occurrence, and particularly intense on Tuesday mornings, between 8 and 9 a.m. in Greater Paris, and on Thursdays between 5 and 6 p.m. in inner Paris. Queues often became interminable, forcing cars to slow down or even stop for several minutes.
The fault lies with Paris traffic, which has been congested for years, despite wider and more numerous lanes. Time, particularly capricious during this month of May it also contributed to a more intense slowdown on the traffic lanes. Last but not least, track renovation work in preparation for the Olympic Games must also have contributed to this result.
At the very bottom of the ranking, we find surprising cities such as Zaragoza, Hong Kong and Singapore. Let’s hope the situation doesn’t escalate during the next few days Paris Olympics which are expected to welcome up to 15 million visitors. ..
