If you live in the capital, many of you are no doubt wondering when the good weather will finally arrive… More than just an impression, the gloom at the start of this year is not anecdotal. According to a survey by Le Parisien, based on data compiled from the Infoclimat website, 2024 is quite simply one of the worst starts to a rainy year in Paris since 1886!
One of the wettest starts to a new year in Paris in a long time
Gray, gloomy weather, repeated downpours and far from clement temperatures: the weather has been making life hard for Parisians for several months now. And if you’re under the impression that 2024 is worse than other years, science will prove you right. For good reason: data collected on Infoclimat by Le Parisien reveal that there have only been five rainier starts to a year in Paris than this one since 1886! Indeed, with 380.8 millimeters of precipitation recorded from January 1 to May 31, this is the sixth worst start to a year in Paris, behind 1995, 2018, 1978, 2016 and 1937 respectively.
“In May, do as you please” : it’s hard to live up to the adage, especially as the month was also one of the worst recorded since 1886 in Paris. With 95.3 millimetres of rainfall, 26.3 millimetres more than the average for the last thirty years, it ranks among the top 20 worst May months since records began.
Atlantic disturbance, the “cold drop” phenomenon and global warming: there are many reasons for this persistent bad weather. Nevertheless, if the forecasts are to be believed, the weather is likely to improve in the coming weeks.
