Chatou, the cradle of Impressionism
Stretching 4.5 kilometers long, the island owes its name to the painters who roamed it in the 19th century: Renoir, Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Sisley, Morisot, and even the Manet family all made it one of their favorite haunts. It all began in 1857, whenAlphonse Fournaise, a former shipwright, and his wife Louise bought an inn on the island and turned it into a guinguette—offering boat rentals, a restaurant, and rooms for rent. Boating was all the rage at the time and inspired Auguste Renoir, who painted one of his most famous works in 1880: *Luncheon of the Boating Party*, immortalizing the terrace of the Maison Fournaise. The artist himself described Chatou as “the most beautiful place in the Paris area.”
The iconic Maison Fournaise and its immersive museum
Closed in 1905 following the decline of the open-air cafés, the Maison Fournaise lay abandoned for nearly a century before being restored in 1990. Today, it houses an immersive museum featuring a holographic tour that allows visitors to literally meet Alphonse Fournaise and Auguste Renoir in person through audiovisual projections recounting the site’s history. A virtual reality headset is even provided so you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the island during the Impressionist era.
A vast 7-hectare park hosting a variety of events
Beyond its artistic past, the island today is brimming with spaces designed for relaxation: the Parc de l’Île des Impressionnistes, a 7-hectare expanse, stands out as the ideal spot for events of all kinds. Every fall, the park transforms into a true open-air theater. Head to the Hameau Fournaise for the Festival Lumières Impressionnistes, a free event that, for its 2026 edition dedicated to the Monet Centennial, transforms the site into a veritable Garden of Dreams: light and plant installations, sound-and-light shows, dance performances, and poetic processions come together to reinvent, for one evening, the painter’s world.
