This place is so closely associated with Monet that it’s hard to imagine any other artist making it their own. Yet this summer, the temple of Impressionism is set to undergo a complete transformation for a few months, spearheaded by one of the biggest names in contemporary French art: Daniel Buren.
An exceptional carte blanche to mark the 100th anniversary of Monet’s death
From July 17 to November 1, 2026, the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny is granting complete creative freedom to Daniel Buren, a French artist born in 1938 whose reputation is well established. This invitation comes at just the right time: 2026 marks the centennial of Claude Monet’s death, and this exhibition is also part of the 2026 Normandy Impressionist Festival.
For this installation , titled *Plantations, site-specific works, 2026*, Buren takes over the entire museum, from the outdoor gardens to the indoor galleries. A work conceived entirely for the site, where the Giverny environment engages in dialogue with the museum’s collections.
Buren’s famous stripes, scattered throughout Monet’s landscape
This is the artist’s signature style: alternating vertical bands of white and color, 8.7 cm wide—a visual tool he has used since the late 1960s to remove a place from its context. Here, his “Plantations” create colorful perspectives in the landscape—tinged with blue, yellow, black, red, and purple—against the lush backdrop of the hill and gardens, extending all the way into the museum’s galleries. Within the galleries, his creations also engage in a dialogue with a selection of works from the museum’s permanent collection, offering a total immersion in the interplay between nature and artistic creation.
An installation to experience in the heart of the village of Giverny
This major exhibition further enriches Giverny’s already packed summer schedule, featuring both Monet’s famous gardens and this new contemporary perspective on the landscape that inspired so many Impressionist masterpieces. A little bonus for the curious: the installation will be open to the public free of charge on September 19 and 20, in celebration of European Heritage Days.
