Anecdotes and curiosities about the Théâtre Montansier
1. A facade that has stood the test of time
The face of the theater remains unchanged, with its current façade also the original. The only conspicuous absence at the top of this façade is a sculpted ensemble by Boullet, depicting Thalie, the muse of comedy, and Melpomène, the muse of tragedy, seated next to Apollo’s lyre. Next time you pass by, keep this detail in mind and enjoy this mini trip back in time!
2. Mademoiselle Montansier
Indeed, this little theater doesn’t take its name from nowhere. Named after the woman who founded it, it pays tribute to this woman with a passion for the performing arts, who made her mark in an era when women’s voices had little value. It was under the Queen’s protection that she succeeded in carrying out her projects, founding a total of ten theaters.
3. An Express Theater
When Marguerite Brunet acquired the land, a condition was attached to the sale: the hall had to be opened by January 1, 1778 at the latest. And unlike today’s work, the deadlines will be respected. The Italian theater was entrusted to Jean-François Heurtier, the King’s architect at the time, and the work was carried out by Boullet, machinist at the Opéra Royal. Ten months later, there’s a new theater on the streets of Versailles.
What can you do at the Théâtre Montansier?
The theater is open all year round, and offers a wide range of programs, from plays to concerts and dance performances. After you’ve had your fill of the show, enjoy a glass of wine in the theater bar and take a detour to the boutique to take home a souvenir of the unique evening you’ve just had.
