The building that once housed the Tati chain continues to live on in the heart of the Barbès district. Until June 2025, it will be home to the Grand magasin éphémère, a contemporary hybrid project straddling fashion, art and design!
Magasin Tati, the emblem of the Barbès district
Tati is no more, but its spirit lives on in the 18th arrondissement. Established in Barbès, a lively working-class district, since the late 1940s, the Tati stores were the other emblem of the 18th arrondissement (alongside the Sacré Cœur) and a must-visit for many Parisians. For almost 70 years, the central store on boulevard Marguerite de Rochechouart and its annexes brought this part of the arrondissement to life as never before.
Despite the store ‘s sad demise in 2021, the 19th-century building lives on, thanks in particular to temporary occupation projects!
The arty new life of the Tati store
For the past few days, Tati has been coming back to life! The site is now occupied by the Grand magasin éphémère, a project led by the Union de la jeunesse internationale, behind which we find Youssouf Fofana, founder of the Château Rouge brand. After District 23 in July 2024, Fofana returns to the site with a proposal halfway between a cultural center and a fashion store. Fashion, design and art feature prominently in this hybrid space, where there’s something for everyone!
The Grand magasin éphémère is home to several fashion corners, mainly dedicated to independent brands inspired by alternative cultures, passionate about local craftsmanship and their contemporary vision of clothing!
On the exhibition side, the walls are decked out (until February 22) with some memorable shots by Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé, including photos from the 1998 Tati50x50 shoot created especially for the store!
Featuring a cafeteria, a library with an exquisite selection of books, a taxiphone-style bookshop and a program of workshops and conferences, the Grand magasin éphémère aims, in its own way, to breathe new life into this unoccupied building!
