To coincide with the 130th anniversary of Gustave Caillebotte’s death, the Musée d’Orsay is devoting an exhibition to the painter until January 19, 2025. Caillebotte, Peindre les hommes focuses on the place of male figures at the heart of the Impressionist artist ‘s work!
An exhibition to celebrate the Impressionist painter’s 130th birthday
Would you like some more Impressionism? After the Paris 1874 Inventing Impressionism exhibition , which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the artistic movement, the Musée d’Orsay is offering another event dedicated to one of its great personalities! Gustave Caillebotte, who died in 1894 and whose 130th birthday is being celebrated this year, has the honor of being exhibited!
This exhibition is not a classic retrospective, but a thematic focus. It focuses on the male figure and its representation in the paintings of the 19th-century painter. It’s an opportunity to explore the artist’s work and see or revisit some of his masterpieces: Partie de bateau (recently acquired by the Musée d’Orsay) or Rue de Paris; temps de pluie (on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago). Some lesser-known works, such as pastels, preparatory works and archival documents, are also on show. This collection provides a better understanding of the artist’s approach and places his work in the context of the 19th century.
Gustave Caillebotte’s men
As you may have guessed, it’s Caillebotte’s people who are displayed on the museum walls! They’re artist friends, workers or earners, and the painter, a keen observer, has depicted them from every angle and in every situation. Nude, in street clothes, at work, on a Sunday stroll or in the family sphere, all these men captured in scenes of daily life or key moments in their existence offer the public a plunge into 19th-century society. With this thematic tour, the Musée d’Orsay also seeks to show the new masculine ideal being constructed in the wake of social upheaval and political change.
