To coincide with the 130th anniversary of Gustave Caillebotte’s death, the Musée d’Orsay is devoting an exhibition to the painter from October 8. Caillebotte, Peindre les hommes will focus on the place of male figures at the heart of the impressionist artist’s work!
An exhibition to celebrate the Impressionist painter’s 130th birthday
Would you like some more Impressionism? After the Paris 1874 Inventing Impressionism exhibition, which celebrated 150 years of the artistic movement, the Musée d’Orsay returns this autumn with an event dedicated to one of its great personalities! Gustave Caillebotte, who died in 1894 and whose 130th birthday is being celebrated this year, will have the honor of being exhibited!
This exhibition will not be a classic retrospective, but a thematic focus. It will highlight the male figure and its representation within the painter’s 19th-century paintings. This will be an opportunity to explore the artist’s work and see or revisit some of his masterpieces: Partie de bateau (recently acquired by the Musée d’Orsay) or Rue de Paris ; temps de pluie (on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago). Some lesser-known works such as pastels, preparatory works and archive documents will also be shown. This ensemble will provide a better understanding of the artist’s approach and place his work in the context of the 19th century.
The men of Gustave Caillebotte
As you’ll have gathered, it’s Caillebotte’s men who will be displayed on the museum’s walls! They are artist friends, workers or rentiers, and the painter, a keen observer, depicted them from every angle and in every situation. Naked, in street clothes, at work, on a Sunday stroll or in the family sphere, all these men captured during scenes of daily life or key moments in their existence offer the public a dive into 19th-century society. With its thematic trail, the Musée d’Orsay, will also attempt to expose the new masculine ideal being constructed in the wake of societal upheavals and political changes.
