From May 7 to 16, the capital will be celebrating one of the country’s culinary emblems with the Bread Festival in the heart of Notre-Dame square. And to round off this wonderful culinary week, we’ll be crowning the best sandwich in France! So which of the 15 local champions from 10 regions of the country will walk away with the coveted title?
What’s the best sandwich in France this year?
76 sandwiches are bought every second in France, i.e. 2.39 billion a year. Just look at these figures to see just how important this delicacy is to the French. Whatever the case may be, this spring will see a new sandwich champion crowned! Organized by the Confédération Nationale de la Boulangerie-Pâtisserie Française, this competition rewards the excellence and expertise of craftsmen from all over the country.
To decide between the candidates, a production jury and a tasting panel, chaired by Xavier Bordet, will scrutinize the creations. Each baker will have to prepare nine sandwiches, three of which will be vegetarian, three meat-based and three fish-based. Following strict specifications, they will have one hour to prepare their breads and fillings, and five hours to assemble and prepare their recipes. After tasting, and analyzing selection criteria such as chewiness, taste and texture, a winner will be chosen and we’ll know the identity of the best sandwich in France.
On the local side, the Île-de-France region will be represented by two outstanding craftsmen. On the one hand, there’s François Moletto from Villiers-sur-Morin and Maxime Sohier from Noisy-le-Grand, who already holds the title of best sandwich in Greater Paris. Verdict on May 16! But in the meantime at Alain Miam Miam or at Baguette du Relais which are among our favorite sandwiches in Paris!
