It’ll be a first for Paris and for France! In a few months’ time, the 18th arrondissement will be home to a vertical, rotating greenhouse. Find out more about the Serre du Ruisseau, an innovative urban agriculture project!
A new project to promote urban agriculture in Paris
Who says you can’t grow anything in the city, and especially in Paris? Vineyards in Montmartre, vegetable patches on the roof of a hall at the Parc des Expositions, a mushroom farm in a parking lot… there’s no shortage of projects!
Urban and Parisian agriculture is indeed possible, as long as you manage to play with the constraints of the environment, and in particular those of space! Although square meters are in short supply in Paris, ingenious solutions are sprouting up in the minds of project leaders who seem unstoppable!
Inspired by concepts developed in certain Asian cities (Hong Kong and Singapore in particular), a vertical, rotating greenhouse will soon see the light of day in Paris, in the 18th arrondissement!
A vertical, rotating greenhouse in the 18th arrondissement
The Ami.es de la Serre du Ruisseau (Friends of the Ruisseau Greenhouse ) have come up with a solution: build high up to get the m² you don’t have on the ground! The association will be building the very first vertical, rotating greenhouse in Paris, on a very limited surface area of 125 m². Thanks to an innovative system of elevated greenhouses with mobile shelves that move throughout the day, each seedling will be able to capture natural light! One of the stated objectives is to grow 17,000 seedlings a year with limited use of artificial lighting!
Located in the 18th arrondissement and straddling three Quartiers Prioritaires de la Politique de la Ville (priority urban development districts), the Serre du Ruisseau will pursue other missions in addition to raising public awareness of ecology and urban agriculture. The association will also carry out cultural and social activities to further enliven the site and open it up to the city and its residents!
To make the most of it, just be patient! The project will take shape from May/June 2025, when construction work begins, leading to a hoped-for opening in 2026!
