While for many, swimming in the Seine is synonymous with a last-minute trip to the dermatologist, it’s actually one of the few options that’s completely free and open to everyone. From July 4 through August 30, Parisians are invited to swim in the city’s most iconic river, every day until 9 p.m.! So there’s no excuse not to cool off!
In July, you’ll finally be able to swim in the Seine
As you probably know, another heat wave is set to hit France in July. So rather than suffering in your apartment in 35°C heat, why not go for a swim… in the Seine? A crazy idea for some, a stroke of genius for others!

In fact, from July 4 to August 30, three free swimming areas will once again be open to the public: the Marie branch in the 4th arrondissement, the Quai de Bercy in the 12th, and the Grenelle branch in the 15th. Just like last year, these areas will be marked off and supervised by lifeguards. And of course, water quality will be tested daily before the first swimmers arrive, to ensure perfectly safe swimming conditions.
A great initiative, to which we can add the Canal Saint-Martin, which is also open to swimmers.
While it may be tempting to take a dip just about anywhere in the Seine, please be aware that outside of designated swimming areas, access to the river is strictly prohibited!
