But who ever came up withthe outlandish idea of building a half-timbered mill above the water? Built in the 16th century, the Vernon Mill wasn’t always like this… Originally, itwas situated on a bridge dating back to the 12th century. But unfortunately, the bridge fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance around 1651, before becoming the curious suspended mill we know today.
A unique curiosity in France that has inspired great artists, such as a certain Claude Monet, who would sometimes escape from his beloved Giverny to capture Vernon and its surroundings on canvas. His stepson and friend, the painter Theodore Earl Butler, also depicted this mill suspended above the Seine in various works…
A symbol, then, of this magnificent Norman village, still cherished by its residents today!
