Its reopening to the public in spring 2023 aims to highlight its architectural, aeronautical and artistic importance since the 16th century.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, it’s the perfect place to catch your breath. Enjoy its natural surroundings and marvel at its impressive architecture. And to round off its already rich cultural offering, Candlelight concerts will soon be lighting their candles under its oversized ceiling, offering a wide range of sonic journeys.
Candlelight concerts at Hangar Y
For the first time, Candlelight puts down its thousands of candles at Hangar Y for a series of vibrant concerts. The 23-meter-high glass roof blurs the boundary between nature and interior space, letting you enjoy the view of the surrounding trees and plants. Illuminated by candlelight, the glass structure that forms the impressive architecture of this venue acquires a new dimension, reflecting the light and immersing you in a poetic atmosphere.
Let the venue lull you into the world of Queen or ABBA. Pop, Jazz, Rock, Classical… With Candlelight, all musical genres are interpreted in a classical version to blur the lines and create a musical experience beyond boundaries.

Anecdotes and curiosities about Hangar Y
1. Its industrial architecture
Hangar Y, an emblem of late 19th century industrial architecture, is distinguished by its iron structure, exposed brickwork, glass roof and curved lines. Built in 1879 by architect Henri De Dion, a former student of Gustave Eiffel, the hangar reuses a section of the Grande Galerie des Machines from the 1878 Universal Exhibition to house airships. Its large glass roof and 23-meter high ceilings provide exceptional luminosity, while its northerly aspect and surrounding vegetation protect it from overpowering sunlight.
2. Cradle of aeronautics
Hangar Y, the world’s first airship hangar, played a major role in French aeronautics from the 19th century to the First World War. Built on military plot “Y“, it housed the Chalais Meudon aerostatic establishment. Hangar Y continued to be a center of innovation until the end of the First World War, manufacturing airships and balloons for the Allies. After the war, it became the first Air and Space Museum in 1921, exhibiting aeronautical treasures and illustrating their role in the defense of France.
3. Marc Chagall’s ephemeral studio
In 1964, Marc Chagall, one of the most famous artists to have settled in France in the 20th century, along with Pablo Picasso, devoted his talent to creating the ceiling of the Opéra Garnier, a significant project. Hangar Y, with its vast 2,800 m2 nave, provides the ideal space to assemble the 13 ceiling panels. On August 7, 1964, the completed ceiling was transported to the Opéra Garnier, revealing its splendor to the public on September 23, 1964.
This new cultural jewel joins unique places in the capital and the surrounding area, hosts of the sublime Candlelight concerts. Here, the greatest artists in the history of classical music are brought to life by virtuoso musicians who transport you into their world for an evening.
