A new venue at La Villette? The announcement came this week that the site in north-east Paris is to host a new facility dedicated to urban culture and its various practices (dance, street art, music…). Freestyle Villette – Maison des Cultures urbaines is due to open next autumn!
A benchmark facility for urban culture
It’s been over four decades since hip-hop made its appearance in France! A major cultural movement at the end of the 20th century, it is now an integral part of the French cultural landscape! Ultra-popular and constantly evolving, hip-hop is also fertile! Visual and graphic arts, music, fashion, dance… that’s why we speak of urban cultures in the plural! To support the dynamism and creativity of this scene and encourage its structuring, the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, has announced the forthcoming inauguration of a venue. Freestyle Villette – Maison des Cultures urbaines will be both a reference site for players in the field, and a place for the public to share their experiences!
Freestyle Villette, hip-hop cultures soon to have their own home
La Villette is about to embark on an exciting, large-scale project to create a venue dedicated to urban cultures! Called Freestyle Villette – Maison des Cultures urbaines, this infrastructure will move into the current Pavillon Villette in autumn 2025.

In this 1,000 m² space, the public will be able to enjoy a program that will showcase hip-hop culture as a whole and its artisans, with urban culture festivals, a musical program enriched by freestyle or DJing sessions, dance battles and street art events! Hip-hop culture will also shine outside the walls of the Maison des Cultures urbaines! For La Villette, this new venue will be an opportunity to equip its immense site with new infrastructures to encourage sporting activities, such as the construction of a basketball court designed by artist Jordan Saget and dance floors (near the Jardin des Voltiges)!
📍 Location: 75019 Paris
📆 Date: from autumn 2025
