Situated on the banks of the River Yser, lined with majestic centuries-old oak trees, Esquelbecq is a village that charms with its rich heritage, dynamic, vibrant cultural life and commitment to tourism. Voted favorite village of the French in 2023 it offers an enchanted interlude just 1h30 by train from the capital!
Esquelbecq, the nugget of the Hauts-de-Flandre region
Let’s start with a little history… Bounded by a Roman road to the west, marking the municipal border with Zegerscappel, Esquelbecq saw its industrial activity prosper, with breweries, linen workshops and tile factories, before intensifying further with the installation of the railway station. This expansion has left its mark on the layout of the town, which has developed close to the train station, giving the Place Bergerot a typically Flemish atmosphere, with its old houses and traditional housing reminiscent of the charm of yesteryear.
Strolling through the village, you can’t help but admire the traditional decorative motifs in different-colored bricks on the gable of the inn, a house with a carved facade, and the Saint-Folquin church, a three-aisled hallekerke (church-hall). The church was ravaged by fire in 1976, but has since been completely restored, offering a breathtaking view of the local heritage and the Flemish plain from its steeple.
Opposite the church stands the castle, whose origins date back to the 9th century, but which was rebuilt in the early 17th century. It is one of the finest examples of seigniorial architecture in Flanders. The château is surrounded by a remarkable Renaissance-style garden, recreated between 1821 and 1852, a conciergerie dating from 1590, and an elegant octagonal dovecote dating from 1606.
Another historic site in Esquelbecq is the Plaine au Bois, which commemorates the massacre of British soldiers during the Second World War. The development of tourism and crafts, with artisans such as potters and brewers, hiking trails, donkey, horse and pony rides, as well as festive events such as the Patate Feest and summer entertainment, have all contributed to the municipality’s dynamism.
All in all, Esquelbecq is a village that captivates with its history, culture, natural surroundings and commitment to tourism. Don’t miss the Grand-Place, the castle, Saint-Folquin church and many other treasures that await you in this timeless village. A visit to Esquelbecq is a journey through the history and beauty of Flanders.
