Even though the fine weather is still a long way off, we’re already thinking about our spring escapades in the Paris region. After hiking and visiting castles, we’d like to tell you about a peaceful spot nestled in the heart of the Chantilly forest. Just a few kilometers from the capital, you’ll find the Commelles ponds, a natural site extending over more than 40 hectares, established on the Thève river, a tributary of the Oise. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Les étangs de Commelles, total disconnection just a stone’s throw from Paris
While the Île-de-France region abounds in small treasures of all kinds, few have the charm or tranquility of the Commelles ponds. Frequented by walkers and nature lovers alike, it’s an unspoilt haven of peace for the whole family or just the two of you. Very pleasant in summer, the four-pond site is also a must-see at the end of the year, when the flamboyant autumn colors dress the surrounding trees. On one of the banks of Etang de la Loge, the pretty Château de la Reine Blanche adds a further touch of cachet.
For an escapade that combines strolling, strolling and gourmet delights, it’s first and foremost possible to walk around the ponds, on a short 5.2-kilometre hike offering lovely views. For a gourmet break, head to the western end of the lake, where you’ll find Étang d’Art, a gourmet crêperie. And for birdwatchers, there’s plenty to do! Be sure to look up and observe all the wildlife that lives here, from swans and cormorants to coots.
How do I get to the Commelles ponds?
It’s a charming place and a great idea for a getaway in fine weather. And for the icing on the cake, this destination is only 20 minutes from Paris. From Gare du Nord station, take the TER (or RER D) to Orry-la-Ville and walk for half an hour to the promised land. All you have to do is enjoy!
