The classical-style chapel in the heart of the capital
Motherhouse of the Missions Étrangères de Paris, the chapel has stood proudly on rue du Bac since its inauguration in 1683! The interior features a Roman-style façade and Corinthian pilasters. 1. Royal protection
When the foundation stone was laid on April 24, 1683, a medal bearing the face of Louis XIV was placed in the foundations, symbolizing royal approval of the seminary and its mission.
2. Host of the Missions étrangères seminary
The chapel was built to house the seminaries of the Missions étrangères. This Catholic company’s mission was to evangelize non-Christian countries, mainly in Asia. Today it has 180 priests, mainly on the Asian continent, and continues to serve the churches it helped found, while the chapel acts as a reception center for Asian student priests.
3. The origin of its name
The name Epiphany comes directly from a Christian feast celebrating the visit of the Magi on January 6 after the birth of Jesus, and his consequent revelation to the world and baptism as Christ and Son of God.
What to do at the Chapelle de l’Épiphanie
By visiting the epiphany chapel you can visit the Martyrs’ Hall, the Crypt, the chapel and the garden from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Guided tours to learn more about its history are also available on Tuesdays for adults and Wednesdays for children at 3pm.
