Every year, as autumn approaches, the Moon becomes brighter and brighter. Called the “Harvest Moon”, this should be particularly visible again tonight. We explain it all to you.
The super Harvest Moon: a sparkling moon
Decidedly, the Moon will never cease to fascinate us! If we know that it becomes full every 29 days, we also know that it changes name according to its cycles: the Strawberry Moon, the super Blue Moon, the Blood Moon… “Colors” that are mostly due to its position in relation to the Sun.
The Harvest Moon gets its name because of its brilliance, which is particularly intense at this time of year. The latter helped farmers with their harvests, when electricity didn’t yet exist. On average, it appears 7.8% larger and 15.6% brighter than a “normal” full moon. That’s why it’s a rare phenomenon to observe!
If the Harvest Moon was particularly visible on the night of September 17 to 18, you’ll be able to see it again tonight. In Paris, it will even be possible, if the weather isn’t too overcast and the sky too polluted, to photograph it from the Seine.
Two more supermoons should be visible this autumn
Astronomy fans rest assured: two more supermoons should be visible again this autumn. The Hunter super Moon will be scheduled on October 17 and the Beaver super Moon on November 15, 2024. The latter will undoubtedly be the most visible, as its peak will be at 10:28 pm. Mark your calendars!
