Paris takes silver… on the podium of Europe’s smelliest cities! According to this study, created by Haypp, a specialist in electronic cigarettes, Paris is the second best-smelling city in Europe (no less). It’s a result that might make you smile, given the capital’s questionable air quality. However, this study is based on very serious criteria. Read on!
Paris, the city of lovers… and good smells!

Haypp based its study on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). This takes into account a city’s air, water and waste management quality. For each city in the ranking, the pollsters also took into account the number of bakeries, perfumeries, florists and candle stores… In their opinion, Paris’ second place is not surprising:
“French culture places great importance on aesthetics and the appreciation of the senses, including the sense of smell. So it’s no surprise that Paris comes in second place with a score of 8.15 out of 10 for the sense of smell”.
Indeed, the smell of coffee and pastries emanating from the city’s bakeries is said to perfume up to 10 square kilometers.

What’s more, the overall EPI score for the city’s cleanliness is more than respectable. With 62.5 points, Paris is better than Athens, the top-ranked city.
The rest of the top 10 smelly cities include Zurich in third place, followed by Dublin, Luxembourg, Nicosia, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Valletta and Amsterdam in tenth and last place.
Clearly, Paris has not finished making headlines… it’s also making heads turn and nostrils tingle! And what do you think?
