In the heart of Brenne, three hours from Paris, stands the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault, a monastic complex whose origins date back to the 11th century. It was here, on the right bank of the Creuse River, that Pierre de l’Étoile established a community following the Rule of St. Benedict in 1091, giving birth to an abbey that would stand the test of time.
An abbey with an incredible history
In the Middle Ages, the abbey developed rapidly, founding some twenty priories in several regions. It withstood the Hundred Years’ War and the turmoil of the Wars of Religion, but was pillaged and ruined before being sold as national property during the French Revolution, like many religious buildings of the time.
After the turmoil of the Revolution and a long century of transformations, during which the abbey was successively used as a farm, a distillery, and even a military hospital, monastic life gradually regained its place. In 1948, a community of monks from the Abbey of Solesmes returned here, reviving the monastery according to the Benedictine tradition. Since then, the community has continued to grow and now numbers around sixty monks.
Fontgombault is renowned not only for its long history, but also for its vibrant monastic life. Faithful to the spirit of St. Benedict, the monks follow a rule of life punctuated by prayer, manual labor, and liturgy.
The architecture of the site is full of charm and character. The abbey church, built in the great Romanesque tradition, has an impressive nave and a harmony of volumes that testify to remarkable medieval craftsmanship. Its length and width place it among the most imposing monastic churches in the region.
Today, the abbey is a spiritual and peaceful place, but it is also open to visitors. Visitors can attend certain services, including sung masses. The service schedule is published regularly, allowing visitors to plan their visit around the celebrations.
Over the centuries, Fontgombault Abbey has successfully combined history, tradition, and spiritual life. Far from the main tourist routes, in a peaceful natural setting, this place offers an authentic immersion in a living heritage.
