For several weeks, its spectacular silhouette had been gradually transforming the Parisian landscape. But just days before its opening, La Caverne du Pont Neuf, the ambitious installation conceived by artist JR, suffered a serious setback.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the organizers announced that the artwork had been damaged that afternoon due to inclement weather. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact causes of the incident and assess the condition of the structure. As a result, the public opening, originally scheduled for June 6, has been officially postponed to a date yet to be determined.
The opening of JR’s Cave postponed
According to several media outlets on the scene, the installation was reportedly severely affected by the winds and rain that have swept through Paris in recent hours. Witnesses observed parts of the canvas lifting and tearing under the force of the gusts.
Conceived by JR, La Caverne du Pont Neuf was intended to transform Paris’s oldest bridge into a gigantic, traversable rock landscape. The artwork rests on a massive inflatable structure covered with a printed canvas, creating a spectacular trompe-l’œil effect. White, black, and shades of gray were meant to create the illusion of a real cave rising above the Seine.

The installation also carries strong symbolic significance. With this project, JR sought to pay tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, forty years after their famous wrapping of the Pont Neuf in 1985, which has become one of the major works in the history of contemporary art in Paris.
Intended as one of the summer’s major artistic events, the artwork was to be on view from June 6 to 28 and accessible free of charge, day and night. Its installation had already drawn many curious onlookers to the banks of the Seine in recent days, fascinated by this strange giant cave taking shape in the heart of the capital.
For now, technical teams are continuing their investigation to determine whether the installation can be repaired quickly or if more extensive repairs will be necessary. The organizers have indicated that a new opening date will be announced once the assessment is complete.
