It’s hard to pinpoint the origins of the little road train. There’s every reason to believe that the first to experience the road was from San Francisco, dating back to 1915. But it was especially in the 60s that its success exploded, becoming one of the favorite activities of children (and parents). In Paris, you can do it in some beautiful parks! Here are all the places not to be missed for a family outing on the little train in Paris.
The Chanteraines park and its old-fashioned little train
Nestled between Villeneuve-la-Garenne and Gennevilliers, le chanteraines park is a sublime place for exercise or a family picnic. You’ll discover a beautiful vintage train, which will take you through 5 km of the estate. A tour that lasts a good hour, but can stop whenever you like. Simply get off at the station of your choice and enjoy the park in your own way. A beautiful place to discover with the whole family!
📍51 Av. du Général de Gaulle, 92230 Gennevilliers
The little trains of Jardin d’Acclimatation
Families know the Jardin d’Acclimatation very well for its zoo or its theme park. But here, we’re particularly interested in its historic little train, put into service in 1878. The three locomotives, which now run on electric power, cover 1,600 meters of the park. You’ll pass through pine forests and enjoy the peaceful surroundings on this short trip.
📍Bois de Boulogne, Rte de la Prte Dauphine à la Prte des Sablons, 75116 Paris
The little train at the Château de Versailles, to explore the Kings’ domain
Granted, even though it’s called a “little train”, the one at the Château de Versailles looks more like a minibus. But the spirit remains the same! It will take you easily to the estate’s points of interest. You can get close to the Trianon castles, or the head of the Grand Canal… Curious visitors will be delighted to learn more about the entire estate with the optional audioguide.
A secret train in the heart of the Fontainebleau forest
This special train offers a one-way ticket to Montargis via the sublime Fontainebleau forest. As in the old days, the train driver uses a simple mirror to make sure you’re on your way. Be careful, you won’t be able to get back on once you’ve got off the train! To use it, go to Gare de Lyon, then take the Transilien line R. This unique train is only available at weekends and on public holidays. A unique family experience!
