Everyone knows the Palace of Versailles, but did you know it hides a sublime Baroque opera house? Adorned with gilding and a multitude of details hand-painted by Louis Durameau, this place is breathtaking. And the good news is that it’s opening its doors to the public—for free—during Heritage Days. And it’s happening this weekend!
A magical opera house located in the heart of the Palace of Versailles
A true gem of French heritage, the Royal Opera House of Versailles—built under Louis XV—is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable in the world. Entirely made of wood, it has seen a parade of royalty, from Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette on their wedding day to, of course, the Sun King himself. When it opened in 1770, it was, in fact, the largest performance hall in Europe!
During Heritage Days, this incredible building will reveal all its secrets. You’ll discover exhibitions of stage costumes, singing performances, the king’s discreet yet oh-so-refined box, and many other surprises—all without spending a single cent. And no reservation is needed to visit : simply head to Place Gambetta, Porte Sénat, on Saturday the 19th starting at 1 p.m. and on Sunday the 20th starting at 11 a.m.
