What do Issy-les-Moulineaux, Favières, and Rueil-Malmaison have in common? Well, these three towns in the Paris region each hide a treasure with an oriental flavor. Japanese gardens are becoming increasingly popular in Île-de-France, but Colombes surely wins the prize for the most idyllic .
The most exotic Japanese garden in Île-de-France
A few streets away from the center of Colombes, Square Médéric holds a surprise that you wouldn’t necessarily expect when passing by its gates. This green space hides a rather unique place: a landscaped Japanese garden that transforms a stroll into a truly exotic escape.
The site was completely redesigned in 2017 after several months of work, at the request of local residents who wanted a more welcoming and pleasant square. The project took the form of a garden inspired by Japanese aesthetics, with plants and landscaping designed to create a calm and soothing atmosphere.
Covering approximately 3,800 square meters, the garden brings together several typical elements. A small river runs through the space, punctuated by bridges and carefully arranged stones. Around the water, there are various characteristic plant species: bamboo, maple, azalea, rhododendron, and magnolia. The trees are sometimes pruned in the style of niwakis, sculpted plant forms often found in traditional Japanese gardens.
Scattered throughout the park, red and gold pagodas catch the eye, while Japanese lanterns line some of the paths. The red bridge crossing the stream is undoubtedly one of the most photographed features in the park. The square was also designed as a living space for local residents. Several playgrounds have been created for children, as well as rest areas and paths that invite visitors to take a stroll. Some of the covered structures are even reminiscent of Japanese temple architecture.
The atmosphere of the garden changes completely with the seasons. In spring and summer, the plants flourish and the square becomes particularly green. Autumn also offers a beautiful spectacle with the famous colors of the maple trees.
Discreet and relatively unknown outside the town, Square Médéric remains one of the most exotic spots in the Île-de-France region. For a quiet stroll or a break in the countryside, this small Japanese garden proves that it is possible to travel far… without leaving Île-de-France!
