Ichikawa: a haven of peace just outside Paris
Located in Issy-les-Moulineaux, this garden is the fruit of a unique collaboration between the French city and Ichikawa, a Japanese town 20 km south of Tokyo. This cooperation, which began in 2008, initially developed in the fields of art, culture and sport, before giving rise to this traditional Japanese garden, the first of its kind in France.

Soothing and exuding Japanese culture, the garden showcases different styles of Japanese gardens, spanning historical periods such as Momoyama (1573-1603) and Edo (1600-1868). The green space symbolizes the passage from mountain to sea, with elements such as stones representing eternity, round stones evoking the island and cape, and gravel symbolizing the sea. A waterfall, a pond and a pebble beach complete the metaphor.
This is a place for those seeking meditation and tranquility. The “Azumaya” arbour, a symbol of peace and serenity, provides the perfect shelter to recharge one’s batteries. In addition, typical Japanese lanterns, known as “Toro,” dot the garden, evoking the peaceful atmosphere of traditional green spaces in the land of the rising sun.

This garden offers an immersive experience in the heart of Japanese nature, just outside Paris. In addition to meditation, visitors can admire treasures such as harmoniously trimmed pine trees, azaleas in bloom, and even a Japanese cherry tree in full bloom in April. In May, yellow irises add a splash of color to the landscape. All in all, this Japanese garden in Issy-les-Moulineaux is much more than just a green space. It’s an escape to serenity and an immersion in Japanese culture, offering Parisian city dwellers a breath of fresh air, just a few steps from the hectic city, at any time of year!
