Almost 400 years after its construction, the Château de Versailles still has many secrets to reveal. After the inauguration of the Perfumer’s Garden in 2023, the Kings’ residence is now revealing two new spaces within its walls: the Congress Hall and the apartment of the President of the Congress. These two new features have been open to visitors since Saturday February 15.
Two prestigious new rooms unveiled at the Château de Versailles
As part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Republic proclaimed in France in 1870, and of the constitutional laws of 1875, the Château de Versailles is showcasing its entire heritage through a series of attractive events. This is an opportunity to recall the sometimes little-known role of the former royal residence in the life of democracy and the exercise of power. But for the more curious and history buffs, the major event not to be missed is the opening to the public of two previously unseen rooms.
On the one hand, there’s the beautiful Salle du Congrès. Nestled in the south wing of the château, this hemicycle-shaped room was the site of presidential elections before the introduction of universal suffrage. Today, it is used by senators and deputies for constitutional revisions or when the President addresses both chambers. Another new area now open to the public is the apartment of the President of Congress, comprising four reception rooms overlooking the Orangerie.
Two new places to add to your list if you’re planning a visit to one of the world’s most prestigious tourist attractions. These historic visits will be limited, however, and the rooms will remain open until September 2025.
