To the west of Paris, certain towns in the Seine Valley preserve a discreet heritage steeped in history. After Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Vernon and Mantes-la-Jolie, this time we head to Poissy. Known for its royal past and several major monuments, the town is home to a Gothic church in its center that has seen one of France’s most famous kings pass through its doors: the Notre-Dame collegiate church.
A little-known medieval collegiate church just a stone’s throw from Paris
Located on the main square, the Notre-Dame collegiate church in Poissy immediately catches the eye with its massive bell tower and ancient silhouette. Construction began in the 12th century, before being completed and transformed until the 16th century. This long construction period explains the mixture of styles that can be seen today, combining Romanesque and Gothic elements. The building is best known for a specific historical event. It was here that the future King Louis IX was baptized in 1214.
On the outside, the collegiate church has a sober architecture, typical of the Gothic style of the Île-de-France region. The square tower, slightly offset from the façade, gives the building an almost fortified appearance. Inside, the nave unfolds under large Gothic vaults. Light enters through the high windows and highlights the simple lines of the architecture. The side chapels and pillars bear witness to the different phases of construction, giving the whole a certain variety without breaking the overall harmony.
The collegiate church is easy to visit during a stroll through the center of Poissy. The neighborhood combines shopping streets, small squares, and access to the banks of the Seine. A few minutes away, you can also visit the Villa Savoye, one of Le Corbusier’s most famous works, which was in the running to represent France in the TV show Le Monument Préféré des Français en 2025 (The French People’s Favorite Monument in 2025).
Accessible by RER or train from Paris, Poissy is an easy half-day getaway. With its royal history, religious heritage, and modern architecture, the Notre-Dame collegiate church remains one of the city’s most iconic monuments.
