Some forty kilometers west of Paris, Mantes-la-Jolie is home to one of the most impressive religious buildings in the Île-de-France region. Dominating the banks of the Seine, the collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Mantes-la-Jolie stands out for its size, elegance and history, which is closely linked to the development of Gothic architecture.
A Gothic jewel at the gateway to Paris
Built from the late 12th century onwards, the collegiate church is a contemporary of Notre-Dame de Paris. Its lines and proportions are so similar that it is sometimes referred to as the “little sister” of the Paris cathedral. Its construction was part of the development of the so-called “classical” Gothic style, marked by the quest for verticality, light and balance. Its facade is remarkable, with twin towers framing a large sculpted portal and a striking rose window.
Inside, the volume of the nave is immediately impressive. The elevations are tall and slender, bathed in light thanks to vast glass windows. Despite the centuries, the building retains a great deal of architectural legibility, making it easy to understand the principles of the emerging Gothic style. The stained glass windows, some of which have been restored, play an essential role in the atmosphere of the place, especially when the sun crosses the Seine at the end of the day.
The collegiate church has endured many trials and tribulations over the years. Wars, the French Revolution, bombardments during the Second World War… The building was severely damaged in the 20th century, notably in 1944. An extensive restoration campaign restored its appearance and solidity, while respecting the original elements. Today, it’s a fine example of heritage preservation, combining historical traces with controlled restoration.
Beyond its religious function, the collegiate church plays an important role in the cultural life of Mantes-la-Jolie. Concerts and musical events are regularly held here, taking advantage of the remarkable acoustics.
