The Maison Européenne de la Photographie will host the first French retrospective of photographer Dennis Morris. With Music + Life, the MEP presents photos from his London youth, as well as a collection of iconic shots of Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols.
The first major exhibition devoted to Dennis Morris
He’s the man behind some of Bob Marley ‘s most memorable images! Dennis Morris, a British photographer of Jamaican origin, followed the international reggae star and immortalized other artists on the British rock scene! The Sex Pistols, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Marianne Faithfull and Radiohead have all passed under his lens.
For this major exhibition, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie retraces Dennis Morris’s career, with a chronological tour featuring his very first photos, previously unpublished shots, his decisive meeting with Bob Marley and striking portraits of musicians!
From London’s working-class neighborhoods to the music scene
Fascinated by the magical dimension of photography, Dennis Morris took up the art as a child! Inspired by street photography, he took his lens to the London borough of Hackney and to Southall, where he immortalized scenes of everyday life in the 1970s.
He then explored the music scene. From his decisive meeting with Bob Marley to his involvement with the reggae(Lee “Scratch” Perry, Peter Tosh) and British punk(Sex Pistols) scenes, Dennis Morris took intimate, personal and incredible shots of these artists, whose spontaneity he was able to capture! As a result, many artists contacted him to have their portraits taken, from Radiohead and the Stone Roses to Oasis and Les Rita Mitsouko!
This collection of photos, some of them previously unpublished, is exhibited alongside record sleeves, revealing a versatile photographer with a talent for highlighting the singularities of artists, and a great passion for music of all kinds!
