With its majestic château, architectural heritage and bucolic hamlets, this village ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable getaway.
Dampierre: a breathtaking architectural heritage
A château with classical architecture and gardens designed by Le Nôtre
It’s impossible to talk about Dampierre without mentioning its jewel: the Château de Dampierre. Built between 1675 and 1683 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the Duc de Chevreuse, son-in-law of Louis XIV’s minister Colbert. It epitomizes the refinement of classical architecture. After belonging to the Albert de Luynes family for over 350 years, the estate was purchased in 2018. It is now undergoing extensive restoration. Since 2019, it has occasionally reopened its doors to visitors, who are seduced by its history and rediscovered elegance.

Its vast 400-hectare walled park, designed by André Le Nôtre, unfurls majestic vistas where today you can stroll on foot, by boat or even in a horse-drawn carriage. With its paths lined with century-old trees and its ponds, it’s an invitation to relax and contemplate.

Its church redesigned by Hippolyte Blondel
But there’s much more to Dampierre than its château. Saint-Pierre church, whose origins date back to the 12th century, was redesigned in the 19th century by architect Hippolyte Blondel. Its south transept, built in 1862, houses the tombs of several members of the ducal family. Opposite, the 17th-century presbytery, with its stone and brick facade, is a further attraction.
The Iron House, Eiffel’s legacy from the 1889 Universal Exhibition
And then there’s the surprising Iron House. Built for the 1889 World’s Fair by the Eiffel workshops, this all-metal colonial building is astonishing for its unusual appearance. Listed as a historic monument, it adds an atypical touch to the local heritage and intrigues visitors in search of unusual discoveries.

Strolling through the heart of Dampierre-en-Yvelines and its hamlets
Dampierre-en-Yvelines is also the art of getting lost in its narrow streets lined with old houses. Here, you can breathe in the peaceful atmosphere of a village square, or simply look up to admire a forgotten architectural detail. Every street corner exudes authenticity.

Nearby, the hamlets of Mousseau and Valence are just as charming. They depict a rural setting worthy of an Impressionist painting. Wash-houses, mills and wells are reminders of the agricultural life of yesteryear. It’s these elements that give the village that extra soul that lovers of bucolic strolls adore.
Unspoilt nature to recharge your batteries
As you’ve already guessed, Dampierre-en-Yvelines is also a wonderful playground for nature lovers. The more curious can venture out on the Maincourt et Marais trail, a sensitive natural area in the valley rich in biodiversity. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot dragonflies, frogs and numerous birds. These species live together in absolute peace and quiet.
The village is also a must for hikers, cyclists and even bikers. With its deep forests, rolling green hills and small network of charming villages, the whole Vallée de Chevreuse is an invitation to explore. So, are you ready for a bucolic day away from the urban hustle and bustle?
