The Paris City Council has voted to confer honorary citizenship on the Seine. A powerful gesture that marks the river’s central role in the history of Paris and France. But beyond this historic recognition, this decision is above all aimed at reinforcing efforts to protect the river…We explain.
Paris: The Seine is awarded honorary citizenship
The Seine is undeniably linked to the history of Paris. One of the most visited rivers in France, it has fed the people who live around it and served as a major trade route. It is home to many species of fish, molluscs and aquatic plants, and has witnessed centuries of history.
Weapons and shells dating back to the wars have been found, as well as amazing animals such as a python and an alligator.
An inexhaustible source of inspiration, the Seine has been the muse of many artists, past and present. For all these reasons, and more, the Paris City Council has decided to grant it honorary citizenship. A first step towards legal recognition? Indeed, by granting rights to the Seine, it could gain access to greater protection, such as restoration in the event of environmental damage or the right to conservation of spaces.
As a reminder, the Seine aims to welcome swimmers in the summer of 2025!
