An unexpected halt at the Grand Palais! While Paris has been hosting one of the year’s biggest art events for the past few days, the organizers have just announced an early closure. Art Basel Paris, which was scheduled to end on Sunday, October 25, will instead close its doors this Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. This decision was made as a precaution, as new protests are planned in the capital this weekend.
Art Basel Paris, a must-see event for contemporary art
Every fall, Art Basel Paris transforms the Grand Palais into a massive gathering for art lovers. Unlike a traditional exhibition, it is an international art fair where galleries showcase and offer for sale the works of their artists.
And the event draws a huge crowd! For its fifth edition, 211 exhibitors from 41 countries and territories are gathering under the famous glass roof. The event brings together both major international galleries and emerging talents. Every year, collectors, art enthusiasts, and the simply curious gather there to discover the works on display.
Beyond the works on display, the event also puts Paris in the spotlight on the international art scene. For a few days, the capital becomes an essential meeting place for key players in the art market. However, the 2026 edition will not run its full course.
Why is Art Basel Paris closing two days early?
Originally scheduled to run through Sunday, October 25, the event will end this Friday evening. The organizers have announced the cancellation of the sessions on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, due to risks associated with the protests planned in Paris this weekend.
As is well known, on October 17, several protests took place in the capital. While the majority of the gatherings proceeded peacefully, some were marred by violence and vandalism.
New gatherings are scheduled for this weekend. Several groups have also called for demonstrations in front of the Grand Palais on Saturday. Faced with the risk of unrest, the organizers have decided to close the event a few days before its scheduled end.

Art Basel Paris: What’s Changing for Visitors
For those who had planned to explore what Art Basel Paris has to offer, the schedule has changed at the last minute. The fair will remain open this Friday until 7 p.m., but will not welcome any visitors on Saturday or Sunday.
This closure also deprives galleries of two crucial days to promote their artists to visitors and collectors. Several industry professionals have expressed their disappointment with this decision.
Regarding weekend tickets, affected visitors are encouraged to review the information published by Art Basel. The terms for any potential refunds have yet to be confirmed.
This major contemporary art event, which was set to run at the Grand Palais through Sunday, is ending sooner than expected.
