Just a 2-hour-and-20-minute direct train ride from the capital, Colmar is one of the most charming getaways for a weekend or longer. And as Christmas approaches, the entire city is transformed, making a visit even more spectacular. Starting November 23, six Christmas markets will pop up all over town for five weeks, promising—as always—a magical atmosphere.
6 Christmas markets in the heart of one of France’s most beautiful villages
While the magic of Christmas is gradually transforming the entire country, it is in Alsace that you’ll find the most traditional and spectacular celebrations. And Colmar is perhaps the finest example of this. For five weeks, the streets and half-timbered houses will light up as small chalets, stalls, and garlands are set up.

The first major market will set up shop on the Place des Dominicains. At the foot of the church of the same name—known for its superb 14th-century stained-glass windows—nearly 60 small stalls will be set up, specializing primarily in crafts and decorations. Just a stone’s throw away, the Place de l’Ancienne Douane will host 50 chalets. This is also where the indoor market at the Koïfhus will be held—a stunning medieval building with colorful roofs.
A little further to the northeast, Place Jeanne-d’Arc will host the fourth market, which will specialize in local products. It’s impossible to visit Colmar without stopping by the famous Little Venice, where another market will be set up along the riverbanks. Finally, a gourmet market featuring nine food stalls and nine chefs will also be set up. In any case, throughout the old town, you’ll find everything that makes a Christmas market a success. Handicrafts, decorations, mulled wine, bredele, and kougelhof: the stalls will be filled with all the best-known Alsatian specialties.

This is a new must-see event for the holiday season. And beyond the Christmas markets, Colmar and the Alsace region are clearly worth a visit in their own right.
