One of Europe’s most underrated Christmas markets, this fairytale wonder stands out from the crowd. With its breathtaking medieval setting, local delicacies and illuminations, this destination 2 hours from Paris and its fairytale Christmas market ticks all the right boxes!
This Eastern European Christmas market is one of the liveliest of the winter season.
As the festive season approaches, the old town of Wroclaw in Poland takes on a whole new look. On the Rynek square, one of the largest in Europe, the Christmas market sets the tone for several weeks. For the 2025 edition, the chalets have been open since the end of November and remain in place until the first days of January, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the winter atmosphere even after the festive season is over.
As for the decor, the colorful facades of the historic houses are the backdrop for impressive lighting installations. A huge fir tree, illuminated arches, light sculptures and a Ferris wheel dominate the square. The market also extends into the adjoining streets from morning into the evening, perfect for a stroll through the city.
When it comes to stalls, Wroclaw is all about variety. You’ll find many craftsmen and women from Poland and Central Europe, with Christmas decorations, wooden toys, woollen items, ceramics and handmade creations.
And for gourmets, Polish specialties are well represented, starting with pierogi, served piping hot, grilled sausages, bigos and potato pancakes. The smells of spices and smoke accompany the stroll, while the local mulled wine, often enhanced with honey and citrus fruit, keeps you warm and tasty. Those with a sweet tooth can also sample traditional cakes, gingerbread and Christmas sweets.
The Wroclaw Christmas Market is also known for its entertainment. Children’s rides, Ferris wheels, occasional shows and musicians bring the square to life all day long. Finally, Wroclaw’s charm is not limited to the market. The city itself is well worth a visit, with its bridges, islands, varied architecture and famous dwarf statues scattered everywhere.
All in all, Wroclaw ticks a number of boxes for those looking for a Christmas market that’s out of the ordinary, accessible and still relatively untouched by mass tourism. A winter destination to end the year in!
