In the heart of this European capital, this giant Christmas market in the city center has been voted Europe’s most beautiful several times over. Just a 2-hour flight from the capital, this is an exceptional destination for a festive getaway off the beaten track.
This urban Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Did you know that Zagreb is one of the most magical Christmas destinations? From the end of November to the beginning of January, the Croatian capital lives to the rhythm of the festive season, and is much more than just a Christmas market. Here, it’s not just one place, but many markets and events all over the city, from the historic center to parks, squares and cobblestone streets.
The heart of the festival beats around Ban Jelačić square, the ideal starting point for discovering the various areas involved. Wooden cottages, garlands of lights and elaborate decorations create a magical and inviting backdrop. A stone’s throw away, Zrinjevac Park offers one of the most popular settings, with its illuminated trees, aisles lined with stalls and music, creating a particularly warm atmosphere at the end of the day.
Zagreb’s credo is to bring Christmas to life on a citywide scale, which has earned the city the title of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market on several occasions. Each district has its own atmosphere, from traditional markets to more contemporary spaces, sometimes accompanied by open-air concerts, DJ sets or light projections on the facades.
Gastronomy is of course a central part of the experience. The stands offer comforting Croatian specialties, perfect for facing the winter cold. These include grilled sausages, stewed dishes, local pastries and, of course, mulled wine in a variety of versions. The smell of spices, sugar and grilled meats lingers in the air, and we’re all delighted.
Last but not least, Zagreb’s Christmas markets are also distinguished by their entertainment. Some squares host open-air ice rinks, while others are transformed into musical stages. The medieval district of Gradec, perched high above the city, becomes one of the most photogenic spots, with its lanterns, art installations and views over the illuminated city. Even the tunnels and underground passageways are taken over to offer immersive, decorated itineraries.
Easily accessible from Paris, Zagreb is an interesting alternative to more traditional Christmas destinations. The atmosphere is festive, and the diversity of the venues means that there’s something for everyone as the evening progresses.
