It’s no secret that Paris is a very mineral city. The city doesn’t have as many green spaces as it needs to refresh itself. Yet parks and urban forests serve several purposes: they cool the surrounding area, capture excess carbon from the air and preserve biodiversity by providing natural shelter for animals. With this in mind, Paris City Council has decided to build an urban forest on the Place Colonel Fabian. We tell you all about it!
A huge urban forest in Paris? You’ll have to wait until 2026 to enjoy it!
The Place du Colonel-Fabien, located between the 10ᵉ and 19ᵉ arrondissement of Paris, will undergo a real transformation next year. As of January 6, 2025, the latter will undergo major development work to become an urban forest. This immense green lung will cover 1760 m², including 1460 m² of forest and 300 m² of planted strips. The plants will all be different to ensure balanced biodiversity.
Bicycles will be able to circulate freely on 412 metres of cycle paths, as will pedestrians, who will have 980 m² of pedestrianized spaces.
For the time being, the first phase of work is aimed at widening sidewalks, cleaning up the area, optimizing lighting and creating pits for future planting. This first phase should last at least until the end of April 2025. But we’ll have to wait until early 2026 to fully enjoy this new green space!
