Nicknamed “the Camemberts” or the Arènes de Picasso, this architectural oddity in Noisy-le-Grand is unlike anything else in the Île-de-France region. Part homage to an ancient arena and part movie set, you’ll understand why this monumental complex fascinates photographers from around the world.
Unusual architecture near Paris
You might think it’s an AI-generated photo or a relic of a futuristic civilization, yet it is indeed… housing! Built in the 1980s by architect Manuel Nuñez Yanowsky, the Arènes de Picasso are a feat of urban planning that continues to divide and astonish even today. If you’re getting a sense of “déjà vu,” that’s normal: this spectacular setting has served as the backdrop for numerous music videos and films, including the recent horror film Vermines.

Its highly atypical camembert-like shape is actually a tribute to Picasso, with its radical, cylindrical geometric forms, and… to antiquity. This building actually represents an overturned gladiator’s chariot. The entire complex faces a huge central plaza, creating the illusion of a Roman amphitheater… in raw concrete! It is this blend of grandeur and symbolism that makes it one of the most sought-after spots for urban explorers.
A city within a city
Despite its appearance as an impregnable fortress, the building is a vibrant community space much loved by its residents. This colossal structure houses 540 apartments, as well as a school, a daycare center, and shops. In short, it has everything you need to be happy!

Whether you’re anarchitecture enthusiast or an aspiring photographer, you won’t be disappointed by the trip.
