In Paris, some little-known corners deserve our full attention. Far from the hustle and bustle of Montmartre, another hill hides in the 19th arrondissement, above Belleville and Buttes-Chaumont. Little known, the Butte Bergeyre is home to a small urban vineyard, accessible on foot and almost invisible to those who don’t know where to look.
This micro-neighborhood hidden in the 19th arrondissement is home to a secret vineyard
Nestled between Rue Manin and Avenue Simon Bolivar, this micro-neighborhood can be discovered after a few steps and a stroll through quiet residential streets. It is in this environment that the famous Clos des Chaufourniers is located. Planted on a small sloping plot of land, these vines occupy a discreet parcel, maintained by an association of local residents.
These vines were planted in the 1990s, in the spirit of Parisian urban vineyards such as those in Montmartre and Belleville. The aim was not to produce wine on a large scale, but to recreate a piece of the old landscape. Before urbanization, the hillsides of Paris were largely covered with vines, particularly in the eastern districts of the capital. Today, the grapes are harvested by residents and volunteers in a friendly atmosphere. The wine produced is not sold commercially and is reserved for participants or local events.

But beyond this mini-vineyard, the hill itself is worth a visit. Strolling through its quiet streets, you will discover colorful houses, staircases, gardens, and a few viewpoints overlooking northern Paris. Some corners even offer a glimpse of Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur. Just a few minutes’ walk from the Bolivar or Buttes-Chaumont stations, the Butte Bergeyre is an easy stroll in the 19th arrondissement. Between the vineyards, shared gardens, and quiet alleys, the place feels like a small village suspended above the city.
It’s a discreet, almost secret spot that reminds us that Paris still has surprises in store, even for those who think they know the capital inside out.
