If you’re dreaming of an exhilarating road trip, head for the Route des Crêtes in the famous Gorges du Verdon, one of France’s most impressive panoramic itineraries. Over 24 km, this loop takes in one vertiginous viewpoint after another, offering spectacular panoramas of one of Europe’s most beautiful canyons. After the Corniche d’Or and the route des Grandes Alpes, it’s time for another spectacular French route.
This road winds its way around one of France’s most beautiful treasures.
The Route des Crêtes starts at La Palud-sur-Verdon and forms a loop winding around the cliffside. The route climbs rapidly, revealing 14 scenic lookouts, some of them over 700 metres above the void. Each stop is a new postcard: limestone cliffs and a turquoise river make up this vertiginous landscape.
It’s hard not to draw parallels with the Grand Canyon: sheer walls, vertiginous hollows and changing light effects throughout the day. Occasional glimpses of griffon vultures or climbers on the rock faces. At every turn, a new vantage point invites you to stop and take photos.
This scenic route can be covered by car, motorcycle or even bike for the more athletic. Allow 1h30 to 2h for a leisurely loop, taking time to enjoy each viewpoint. The Route des Crêtes is generally open from March to November (check road conditions in winter, as some sections may be closed). To get there, drive to La Palud-sur-Gorges from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie or Castellane. From Paris, the easiest way is to take a train to Aix-en-Provence and then rent a car.
More than just a road, the Route des Crêtes des Gorges du Verdon is a permanent spectacle and perhaps the best way to discover this natural treasure. Each belvedere offers breathtaking views and makes you feel tiny in the face of nature. Combine this adventure with a swim in Lac de Sainte-Croix or a hike for an unforgettable day out!
