One of France’s most memorable roads, the Corniche d’Or, also known as the Corniche d’Estérel, is a true jewel of the Côte d’Azur. Running for 30 km along the coast, it offers all those who take it a special moment between the red rocks and the turquoise blue of the sea.
The Corniche d’Or: 30 km of panoramic road between sea and red rocks
For a spectacular getaway in France, head for the Corniche d’Or, a 30-km route linking Saint-Raphaël to Cannes. Carved out of the red rocks of the Estérel at the beginning of the 20th century, this panoramic road offers one of the most beautiful drives or motorcycle rides in France.
The Corniche d’Or was inaugurated in 1903 on the initiative of the Touring Club de France. At the time, the idea was to make the landscapes of the Estérel accessible to travellers. A successful gamble: for over a century, this route has been considered one of the jewels of the Riviera. With its red cliffs plunging into the Mediterranean and its sinuous curves, it is now ranked as one of France’s most beautiful tourist itineraries.

As the road twists and turns, it reveals a spectacular alternation of wild calanques, rocky capes and turquoise coves. The contrast between the flamboyant color of the Estérel massif and the deep blue of the sea is striking, especially at sunset. There are several viewpoints from which to stop and admire the panorama, or descend to the discreet little beaches nestled between the cliffs.
Around 30 km long, the Corniche d’Or can be covered in less than an hour, but it’s best to take your time. Many choose to do it by motorcycle or car, but it’s just as enjoyable by bike for the more sporty. It’s also an excellent starting point for exploring the trails of the Estérel massif, such as Pic de l’Ours and Cap Dramont.

The route can be explored all year round, but the months of May to September are particularly recommended for enjoying the light and swimming. From Nice, it takes around 1 hour to reach Saint-Raphaël. For an even more spectacular experience, some travelers take the Côte Bleue train, which runs along the same stretch in some places, giving them a different way to enjoy the scenery.
Between sparkling sea and red cliffs, this route remains one of the most beautiful ways to discover the Côte d’Azur!
