In April, the Musée Maillol will host the first retrospective devoted to Robert Doisneau in almost 20 years! Instants donnés will bring together over 300 works by the emblematic photographer in a thematic exhibition!
A major retrospective on Robert Doisneau
Robert Doisneau, the most famous of French photographers, author of the famous Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville, is being honored with a major exhibition that will enable the public to embrace almost 60 years of his career. It’s been two decades since the photographer has had such a major event in the capital.
The Musée Maillol will be the venue for an exhibition of some 330 photos, both black & white and color, as well as personal objects and documents.
The twentieth century through the lens
Conceived as a journey through the twentieth century through the photographer’s eyes, Instants Donnés will present some of Doisneau’s rich output. It will be divided between the subjects that most animated and inspired him!

Alongside Doisneau’s recurring themes (childhood, scenes of everyday Parisian life, his series on bistros and the literary world…), the museum will also be exhibiting other motifs dear to the artist’s heart. Instants donnés will highlight his collaborations with the advertising world and Vogue magazine, for whom he covers social and cultural events, and organizes fashion shoots.
From a glossy world to that of the Paris suburbs, there’s only one step for the photographer! A keen observer of the changes at work, Doisneau also captured the transformation of the suburbs, which he first immortalized in the 50s, then 30 years later, in the 80s.
