Established since 1880 at 16-18 place Gaillon in Paris’s 2nd arrondissement, Drouant is much more than just a restaurant. Founded by Alsatian Charles Drouant, over the decades it has become a capital institution: since 1914, the Prix Goncourt jurors have met here in the famous salon of the same name. As early as 1914, the academicians sat down at Drouant to deliberate, choice after choice, on the novels that would make history.
A historic restaurant in every respect
Let’s start with the decor. The Art Deco staircase designed by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, the first-edition library on the mezzanine floor and the cosy private lounges are just some of the features that immerse us in this extraordinary setting. As you walk through the room, you’ll appreciate the mosaic floor, the antique woodwork and the 1920s-inspired armchairs.
On the culinary front, the current menu offers classic French cuisine, brought up to date with new chef Romain Van Thienen at the helm. One of the signature dishes not to be missed is the famous madeleine de Proust large-format dessert, available à la carte, to eat in or take away. In itself, it embodies the spirit of the place: a nod to memories, a delicacy to share, in a setting steeped in history.
This dessert is also part of a wider tradition: every year, on the occasion of the Prix Goncourt special lunch, an exceptional menu is offered, and guests who choose this menu leave with this signature madeleine. In this way, Drouant offers the experience of a gourmet meal and a moment out of the ordinary.
Finally, on the menu, the giant madeleine is just one fancy dessert among a long list of delicious dishes. The à la carte menu includes revisited classics, seasonal produce, a cheese cart and a fine cellar. Both a gourmet restaurant and a literary mecca, Drouant is a real nugget you’ll want to try!
