A real gem in the south of France, this remarkable abbey ticks all the boxes for an unusual place par excellence. Accessible from Marseille, just over 3 hours by train from the capital, it is an essential stop on any getaway to Provence.
A medieval gem nestled in the heart of the forest
In the heart of a landscape of hills and holm oaks in the Var, Thoronet Abbey is one of the most remarkable Cistercian abbeys in France. Founded in the 12th century by monks from Mazan Abbey, it is one of the “three Provençal sisters” along with Sénanque and Silvacane.
Built between 1160 and 1230, the abbey perfectly illustrates the Cistercian ideal: simplicity and harmony with nature. Here, there are no gildings or spectacular frescoes. The stones, clean lines, and balanced volumes are enough to create a striking atmosphere. The abbey church is the heart of the site. Its barrel vaulted nave and sober choir offer acoustics that are renowned for being exceptional. Every summer, classical and sacred music concerts are held here, showcasing this unique sound quality.
The more intimate cloister is organized around a central garden. The simple arcaded galleries invite contemplation, and nearby you can discover the chapter house, the refectory, and the monks’ dormitory, witnesses to medieval monastic life.

The location of the abbey was no accident. The Cistercian monks sought isolation and self-sufficiency. The site of Thoronet, surrounded by forests and close to a river, perfectly met these criteria. The silence that still reigns today gives an idea of what life must have been like for the monks in the Middle Ages.
Listed as a historic monument since the 19th century, Thoronet Abbey has undergone extensive restoration work to preserve its authenticity. It is now open to visitors and attracts architecture enthusiasts, history buffs, and visitors in search of serenity.
About an hour and a half from Marseille or Nice, the abbey is an ideal cultural getaway in Provence. With its Romanesque heritage, Mediterranean landscape, and timeless atmosphere, Thoronet offers a rare immersion in Cistercian art.
