Just 3 hours by train from Paris, Sénanque Abbey lies in an unassuming valley, surrounded by hills and fields. Founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks from Mazan, this abbey remains one of the most striking examples of medieval religious architecture in Provence. Its sober, almost austere silhouette contrasts with the surrounding landscape, especially when the lavender fields are in bloom.
A Cistercian abbey in the heart of lavender fields
The abbey was designed according to the strict principles of the Cistercian order, which advocated simplicity, silence and withdrawal from the world. There are no superfluous ornaments or ostentatious sculptures here. The abbey church, the cloister, the chapter house and the monks’ dormitory form an ensemble designed to punctuate monastic life between prayer and work.
Over the centuries, Sénanque Abbey has seen periods of prosperity, but also decline. Abandoned after the French Revolution, it was used for a time as a farm building before being bought back and restored in the 19th century. Since the 20th century, a community of Cistercian monks has once again lived here, perpetuating a continuous, discreet monastic presence faithful to the spirit of the place.
What strikes you immediately on arrival is the close link between the abbey and its surroundings. The lavender fields surrounding the site, cultivated by the monks, have become one of the most emblematic images of Provence. In summer, when the flowers are in full bloom, the contrast between the purple of the lavender rows and the light-colored stone of the abbey offers a striking spectacle.
The tour takes in the essential spaces of monastic life, as well as the daily life of the monks, still punctuated by services and manual labor. The abbey store sells products derived from this activity, such as honey and essential oils, in logical continuity with the site’s agricultural history.
With its picture-postcard landscape, this is a must-see for anyone exploring the Luberon! What’s more, the abbey is located in Gordes, which was recently voted the most beautiful village in the world, quite simply.
