About thirty minutes from Paris, the Minière ponds offer a pleasant and accessible escape into nature. Located between Guyancourt and Versailles, in the heart of the national forest, they are one of those still somewhat unspoiled spots where people come to walk, run, or simply relax by the water.
A bucolic stroll along the water’s edge
The site consists of several bodies of water lined up in the Bièvre Valley. These include the Braque Pond, the Moulin à Renard Pond, the Minière Pond, and the Val d’Or Pond, which together cover an area of about 25 hectares. The entire area is set within a fairly dense wooded environment, which quickly gives the impression of being far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The history of the site goes back much further than one might imagine. The first pond was created in the 17th century, under Colbert’s initiative, to help supply water to the Versailles estate. The current landscape, however, dates mainly from the 1960s, when the ponds were redesigned to manage runoff associated with urbanization.
Today, the area is entirely geared toward strolling and walking. The trails make it easy to walk around the ponds without any particular difficulty. The route is flat and equally suited to a leisurely stroll or a more vigorous hike. Some routes even allow you to connect with other spots in the Bièvre Valley for a longer outing.

Here, the water is calm, the banks remain fairly wild, and the forest almost touches the ponds. You’ll come across a few fishermen, joggers, and families out for a walk, but the site remains fairly quiet, especially on weekdays. There are several areas where you can set up for a picnic, with a direct view of the water. The setting is perfect, especially in spring and summer, when the vegetation is lush and the weather is ideal.
From Paris, you can reach the ponds by train to Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines or Saint-Cyr, then finish the journey on foot or by bus. By car, several parking lots also allow you to arrive directly at the trailheads. It’s up to you!
