When you think of Fontainebleau, the first things that come to mind are the château, the forest, or the grand royal avenues. Yet, right at the foot of the monument, a more discreet spot is well worth the detour. The Étang des Carpes, a vast body of water located within the castle grounds, is one of the most charming getaways to discover just outside Paris. Combining heritage, tranquility, and a stroll along the water’s edge, the site offers a particularly pleasant getaway once the warm weather arrives.
A 500-year-old royal pond just a stone’s throw from Paris
Facing the château, the pond and its tree-lined banks, with a small pavilion perched on an islet at its center, seem straight out of a fairy tale. Together, they form one of the most elegant views on the Fontainebleau estate.
The Carp Pond dates back to the 16th century, during the reign of Francis I, who initiated the first major developments on the estate. This body of water served as a reservoir, a landscaping feature, and a venue for royal entertainment. Later, it hosted water festivals, boat rides, and water games. In the center, the current pavilion was rebuilt under Napoleon I, following an earlier version constructed under Louis XIV. The site’s name, of course, comes from the carp that have inhabited the pond for centuries and can be spotted during a stroll.

Today, the pond remains one of the most popular spots on the estate for a stroll. You can walk along the banks, sit for a few minutes facing the water, or continue on to the castle’s other gardens . The nearby English garden perfectly complements the walk with its more romantic layout and lush vegetation.
On sunny days, the experience becomes even more enjoyable with the opportunity to row a boat on the pond. Boats are regularly available during the season, allowing visitors to discover the château from a unique perspective, directly from the water.

From Paris, it takes about 40 minutes by train from Gare de Lyon to reach Fontainebleau-Avon, followed by a few minutes by bus or on foot to the château. Spring and summer remain the best times to fully enjoy the site, so now is the perfect time to do so.
The Étang des Carpes is one of those places that many people pass by without stopping to linger. Yet it is undoubtedly one of the most pleasant spots in Fontainebleau. A simple and refreshing stroll—keep it in mind whenever you feel the urge to get some fresh air!
