Just fifteen minutes by boat from the port of Cannes, Saint-Honorat Island is home to one of the oldest monasteries still in operation in Europe. The history of the place began around 410, when Saint Honorat founded a religious community on this small island in the Lérins archipelago. Despite invasions, pillaging, and periods of decline, monastic life never completely ceased here.

Unlike some monasteries that are closed to the public, Lérins Abbey is open to visitors, although certain areas remain reserved for the community.
The tour usually begins with the abbey church, rebuilt in the 19th century in a sober style, faithful to the Cistercian spirit. Around it, you can discover the cloister, a few convent buildings, and several small chapels scattered across the island, such as the Chapel of the Trinity or the Chapel of Saint-Sauveur, perched on a slightly higher point.
One of the most spectacular features of the site is the fortified monastery, a large medieval tower built to protect the monks from pirate attacks. You can climb up to enjoy a unique panorama of the sea and the Cannes coastline. From the ramparts, the view stretches over the turquoise waters, the neighboring islands and, on a clear day, as far as the foothills of the Estérel.
The island can easily be explored on foot in less than an hour, walking along coves, pebble beaches, and paths shaded by pine and eucalyptus trees. Another surprising feature of the abbey is its wine production. The monks have been cultivating vines for centuries and now produce several renowned wines and liqueurs. These bottles, made on the island, are sold in the abbey shop and are one of the community’s main sources of income.
