The Musée d’Orsay ‘s new exhibition highlights the art of the illustrated poster, a genre that flourished in the second half of the 19th century. Almost 230 pieces, including works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha and Bonnard, are on view until July 2025!
An exhibition on illustrated posters at the Musée d’Orsay
Following its cycle of exhibitions dedicated to Impressionism, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, the Musée d’Orsay invites visitors to explore another genre, or even another form of artistic creation! In L’art est dans la rue, the focus is on the illustrated posters and advertisements that proliferated in Parisian public spaces in the second half of the 19th century, considered to be its golden age! With a collection of nearly 230 works, this event will showcase the sub-genres of a flourishing practice, the creations of master poster artists, and the social and cultural context that fueled this booming artistic scene!
A plunge into the effervescence of the capital’s streets
Until early July, posters by Chéret, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Grasset and Mucha, drawings and paintings, as well as objets d’art, photographs and costumes, will transport you to the streets of Paris, transformed into a privileged place of expression and promotion!

L’art dans la rue will explore the spread of artistic posters in public spaces, and the impact of the invention of the color poster. It will also look at the commercial and department store advertising posters that were emerging at the time, those commissioned by show producers ( cabarets, circuses or café-concerts) and, finally, the very first illustrated posters of a political nature.
