What if your next getaway took you to the Italian sun? Just a 2-hour-and-15-minute flight from Paris, one destination has just claimed the top spot among Europe’s most charming historic cities. That’s what Tourlane’s 2026 ranking reveals. And no, it’s neither Rome, Florence, nor Venice! With its small pizzerias and ancient palaces, Naples has plenty of surprises in store. In fact, it takes just a few steps to discover a hidden gem behind an ordinary facade.
Naples, Europe’s Most Charming City According to Tourlane
To compile this ranking, the travel website Tourlane studied 65 cities around the world. Four criteria were taken into account: the age of the historic centers, ease of access on foot, the cost of guided tours, and their popularity on social media.
This year, Naples took first place in the European ranking, ahead of Córdoba, Spain, and Avignon, France. It succeeds Kraków, Poland, which held the top spot in 2025.
But what makes Naples so special? Its history! Founded in ancient times, it boasts an exceptional heritage that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Different eras overlap here. From one street to the next, you might find yourself standing before Greek and Roman ruins that blend with Baroque palaces, just a stone’s throw from ancient churches and the multicolored facades of buildings.
Yet Naples doesn’t feel like a museum frozen in time. The historic center of Naples is full of life. Locals chat from their balconies. Small grocery stores and artisans line the street corners. As you stroll through the old town, you see the city’s authenticity, which has remained unchanged for centuries.
Historic treasures, lively neighborhoods, and pizza: what to do in Naples over a weekend?
In Naples, the charm begins the moment you arrive. Scooters weave through the narrow streets, laundry hangs drying from windows, and conversations echo from one balcony to the next. It’s a noisy, joyful, somewhat chaotic city—but utterly endearing. That’s precisely what gives it all its charm.
To see this for yourself, just take a stroll through Spaccanapoli, right in the heart of the historic district. It’s a pleasure to get lost, step inside a small church, or stop to watch artisans at work. At street corners, you might stumble upon a hidden courtyard or a pretty square you hadn’t planned to visit.
And Naples can surprise you with its tranquility. Behind the walls of the Santa Chiara monastery, a magnificent inner garden with colorful columns offers a peaceful retreat not far from the city’s hustle and bustle. A few steps further on, you can admire the famous Veiled Christ in the Sansevero Chapel, a sculpture so impressive that it’s hard to believe it’s made entirely of marble.

Simple pleasures are also part of the journey
To truly discover a city, what could be better than taking the time to live like the locals? Stop at the counter for an espresso followed by a quick bite of pastry, and finish by taking the time to savor a real Neapolitan pizza. A simple Margherita, with its soft crust and melt-in-your-mouth mozzarella—one taste is all it takes to understand its worldwide fame.
When you feel like getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, head to the sea. The Lungomare, a long promenade that runs along the bay, is particularly pleasant in the late afternoon. There, you’ll find Neapolitans out for a walk, chatting, or simply enjoying the view of Mount Vesuvius.
In just two or three days, you’ll have plenty of time to fall under Naples’ spell. Direct flights from Paris make this Italian city a wonderful option for a weekend getaway.
A destination that deserves much more than just being a stopover on the way to the Amalfi Coast!
