Cobbled streets, three kilometers of listed ramparts, and a medieval setting straight out of a movie: the city of Carcassonne is one of the most beautiful symbols of French heritage. Less than a 5-hour train ride from Paris, it’s ideal for a getaway combining centuries of history, medieval charm, and beautiful panoramic views.
A treasure trove of heritage, perfect for a medieval getaway
Perched on a hill above the Aude River, the medieval city of Carcassonne looks as if it has stepped straight out of a fairy tale. Since 1997, this complex has been designated—and rightly so—as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although its origins date back to the Gallo-Roman era, the fortified city has stood the test of time—and notably avoided destruction—thanks to the successive efforts of several illustrious figures, such as the famous Viollet-le-Duc. Today, many visitors pass through its two walls to explore its ruins and points of interest.

Instantly recognizable, the city’s silhouette is made up of 52 towers, some of which feature pointed, colorful roofs. In all, 3 kilometers of ramparts encircle the old buildings, forming this incredible medieval complex. In fact, the best spot to take in the city as a whole is the Pont-Vieux, built over the Aude River in the 14th century. Here, it’s in the evening, when the ramparts are lit up, that Carcassonne likely reveals its most beautiful side.
What to Do and See in Carcassonne?
Once inside the walls of the medieval city, simply stroll around to soak up the atmosphere. Old houses and cobblestone streets immerse us in an authentic atmosphere steeped in centuries of history. Among the must-see sights are the Château Comtal, built in the 12th century; the beautiful Basilica of Saint-Nazaire; and the city’s former grand theater, now named after Jean Deschamps.

But Carcassonne isn’t limited to its old town; the lower city is also worth exploring. The Saint-Louis bastide , for example, offers all the charm of an Occitan village, with its many shops. You can also enjoy the Canal du Midi and its banks for a pleasant little stroll.
Whether for a weekend or longer, there are plenty of good reasons to consider Carcassonne for a getaway from Paris.
